Chimney Crowns
poured-concrete | stone ledger | stylized form
A concrete crown forms the “roof” of your chimney and its job is to divert water away from the chimney structure. After all, water is your chimney’s worst enemy, especially in colder climates like Minnesota. The freeze-thaw cycle that causes expansion and contraction wreaks havoc on masonry, causing bricks to spall or flake, mortar to crumble, and concrete to crack.
Since the crown is your chimney’s first line of defense, it is also typically the first to show signs of wear. Any disrepair should be promptly addressed in order to prevent water intrusion into the chimney and possibly into your home. All of our crowns function similarly in their duty to shed water and maximize runoff. The difference in chimney crown options is mainly of cost and appearance. All are carefully crafted and carry a 5-year limited warranty.

Chimney crowns
Poured-concrete crown
Our standard poured-concrete crown is a sturdy structure crafted from concrete poured into a wooden crown form. This crown comes standard with every chimney repair job we perform, at no additional cost.
- Reinforced with rebar and wire mesh for strength.
- Expansion joints around the flue tiles to accommodate contraction and expansion during Minnesota’s freeze/thaw cycle.
- Minimum thickness of 2 1/2 inches.
Chimney crowns
Stone ledger crown
The limestone ledge crown consists of a slab of limestone that overhangs the chimney by at least 2 inches all around, with a concrete slope formed on top and a rugged rock-face edge.
- Reinforced with rebar and wire mesh for strength.
- Expansion joints around the flue tiles to accommodate contraction and expansion during Minnesota’s freeze/thaw cycle
- A drip edge (groove in the underside of the overhang) prevents water from running down the sides of the chimney.

Chimney crowns
Stylized form crown
The most elegant of options, the stylized form crown is a sturdy 4 inches thick, built of crack-resistant concrete further strengthened with rebar and wire mesh. It overhangs the chimney by 2 inches on all sides, and the form itself contains a built-in drip edge. The stylized form is available in 2 styles: Top Rib (shown) and Victorian, both of which serve to beautifully adorn your chimney.
